CableLabs opens door to development labs
Now that it has moved into larger digs, CableLabs Inc. has announced it is expanding its lab facilities to speed along Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification, PacketCable and CableHome specifications product development.
The Louisville, Colo.-based cable technology consortium recently moved into its new 77,000-square-foot headquarters, and the added space has allowed it to create bigger, more diverse lab with special support for OpenCable product development that should open for business in June. The lab will be further expanded to offer the same amenities for CableHome and DOCSIS products.
CableLabs is continuing its specifications testing and certification duties, but the addition of the development labs allows it to offer consumer electronics manufacturers - some of which are relatively new to cable technology - the tools to advance their cable-based products more quickly.
"The manufacturing community developing DOCSIS, PacketCable, and CableHome products have been asking for this kind of support from CableLabs for some time," said Ralph Brown, CableLabs' senior vice president of broadband access. "Now we will be able to expand the development lab and meet the demand coming to us from manufacturers." Lab uses may include identifying and resolving bugs, interoperability testing, new product development, and troubleshooting.
