Comcast gives Ucentric's music app a test drive
Following up on some earlier trial work involving multi-room digital video recorders, Comcast Cable has agreed to test out a new "whole home" music application from Ucentric Systems.
Ucentric's software, in concert with a media center from Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., enables users to store music and play it back on networked TVs, PCs and stereos. Ucentric unveiled the Whole Home Music 1.0 platform in October 2003.
Comcast will launch the music trial in Philadelphia later this month. The MSO announced last May it was testing multi-room DVR technology with Ucentric and Samsung. That ongoing technical test also is taking place in the Philadelphia area.
"The Ucentric music application is a natural extension of our multi-TV DVR trial, with both applications focusing on delivering a dynamic whole-home entertainment solution for our customers," said Steve Craddock, Comcast's senior vice president of new media development.
In related news, Ucentric also introduced a high-definition version of its multi-room entertainment software. Ucentric will show off the new platform at the 2004 Consumer Electronics Show, which kicks off January 8. The company's Whole Home High Definition Digital Software Suite provides support for high-definition photos.
