Cable may be elbowing its way into commercial services, but DSL providers won't relinquish market share without a fight.

In an effort to stabilize its competitiveness in the small- and medium-sized business sector, The DSL Forum has released a new technical report (TR-060) that outlines interoperability testing plans for SHDSL, a technology that promises to provide symmetrical speeds up to 2.3 Mbps, and at lengths up to 18,000 feet.

"TR-060 means the SHDSL equipment meets the global standard and paves the way for a deployment of business-class symmetric DSL services," claimed DSL Forum President Tom Starr, in a release.

TR-060 follows TR-040, the Forum's testing plan for asymmetric DSL equipment interoperability.
