Cox Communications said it will help its cable modem subs battle unwanted e-mail by offering Network Associates' McAfee "SpamKiller" application. Cox already offers its customers with access to McAfee-branded "VirusScan," firewall and digital privacy PC software products.

"We understand that spam is a nuisance many customers would like to avoid," said Steve Gorman, Cox's executive director of marketing for residential Internet services. "McAfee SpamKiller is just one tool in our growing arsenal to combat e-mail spam."

Cox said it is also in the process of developing network-based spam-control systems.

"We're studying anti-spam solutions that will integrate with our e-mail platform, using a variety of tactics including rules-based methodologies as well as blacklists to block incoming spam from known spammers," Gorman said.
