Cox bullish on the DVR

Matching renewed aggressiveness with new video-on-demand rollouts, Cox Communications said earlier this week it will offer digital video recorder (DVR) service in six new markets: San Diego, Santa Barbara and Humboldt, Calif.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Las Vegas, Nev.; and Cleveland, Ohio.

The MSO presently offers DVR service in Gainesville, Fla. and Northern Virginia. The new launches will make the technology available to 35 percent of Cox's homes passed by year-end, the company said.

Cox will charge $9.99 per month for the service, plus the lease price of the integrated DVR digital set-top.

Further demonstrating that the DVR and VOD have become a "both" decision for cable operators as they continue to do battle with DBS, Cox earlier this month picked up the VOD deployment pace by selecting a second vendor, Seachange International, and reiterating plans to launch the service in five more markets by the end of Q1 2004.
