Arris offers DOCSIS 2.0 upgrade path
Arris said it has ironed out agreements with "major" customers on the timing and pricing to upgrade deployed Cadant C4 cable modem termination systems to DOCSIS 2.0 specifications.
The upgrades will center on a module — the Arris 2Dx12U DOCSIS Cable Access Module (CAM) — that can be inserted into existing Cadant C4 chassis. The upgrade will also require installation of the Arris' Release 4.0 software.
The new CAMs support 2 downstream channels and 12 upstream channels, plus the upstream-dilation features supplied by the DOCSIS 2.0 specification.
To date, only one CMTS vendor, Terayon Communication Systems, has been awarded DOCSIS 2.0 qualification. Arris said it plans to submit a Cadant C4 outfitted with the new CAM to CableLabs for DOCSIS 2.0 testing in certification wave 28, slated to kick off in the first quarter of 2004.
"We have several agreements currently in place with new and existing customers to upgrade C4s and are actively selling the modules to cable customers worldwide," said Arris Broadband President Jim Lakin, in a release.
Cisco Systems, the largest vendor in the CMTS sector, has moved ahead on a similar approach, proposing line card upgrades for its widely deployed uBR7246VXR CMTS.
