Tivo rebates Series2 DVR
Aiming to apply some extra oomph to its traditional push during the holiday buying season, Tivo Inc. will offer a $50 rebate on its Series2 digital video recorder (DVR).
After rebate, the company's 40-hour units will go for $199 apiece. The price of Tivo's 80-hour Series2 models will go for $299.
Tivo's mail-in rebate, good from Sept. 12 through Dec. 31, does not apply to DirecTV receivers with built-in Tivo technology. Customers also need to purchase a subscription to the Tivo service to qualify for the rebate.
Despite a partnership with DirecTV and expectations to breach the 1 million-sub barrier by the end of its current fiscal year (Jan. 31, 2004), Tivo is feeling competitive pressure on several fronts. EchoStar Communications, for example, pushed the time-shifting needle late last month by offering its 120-Gigabyte DISH Player-DVR510 receiver for free to new customers through Jan. 31, 2004.
Cable operators such as Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable are also trying to make waves with digital set-tops equipped with on-board DVRs.
