Motorola Broadband has inked a deal to integrate conditional access (CA) technology from Viaccess with three DVB-compliant and EuroDOCSIS-based digital set-tops: the DVi1000, DVi3000 and DVi3500. Viaccess is a division of France Telecom.

"This agreement is a key step toward giving cable and satellite operators the freedom and ability to utilize Motorola's broad range of digital set-top solutions using Viaccess conditional access technology," said Paul King, Motorola vice president and general manager, Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).

Motorola's decision to integrate a third-party CA is seen as a move to help it establish a wider set-top footprint outside the U.S. That strategy contrasts sharply the approach Motorola has taken in the U.S., where its proprietary MediaCipher conditional access system populates the vendor's widely deployed line of digital cable set-tops.
