MainConcept said its MPEG encoding technology will populate Microsoft TV's recently launched "Foundation Edition" software platform for digital cable set-tops.

Microsoft's platform will use the MPEG gear at the server level to convert graphic-rich video-on-demand "storefront" backgrounds into MPEG still images, MainConcept said.

MainConcept's MPEG abilities will ship with Foundation "in locked form," but can be activated via the purchase of a license key from the MainConcept Web site.

Microsoft unveiled Foundation this past June at the 2003 National Show in Chicago. In the U.S., Microsoft has scored Foundation trial commitments from Time Warner Cable and Comcast.
