CableLabs awarded approval to the third CableCARD (formerly known as the point-of-deployment, or POD, module), granting qualification to NDS Group.
CableLabs has already qualified CableCARDs from Scientific-Atlanta and Motorola Broadband.
The CableCARD contains the conditional access (CA) and encryption elements for cable services. As a prime component of OpenCable and the proposed CE-cable "Plug-and-Play" agreement, the CableCARD separates the CA from the digital "host" (set-top, television, etc), and is designed to perpetuate a retail market for digital cable equipment.
CableLabs completed OpenCable certification wave 16 late last month. OpenCable wave 17, the final one for 2003, is scheduled to begin in late September and conclude on or around Oct. 31.
