TiVo, Gemstar-TV Guide mend fences

TiVo Inc. and Gemstar-TV Guide International have decided to play nice...and Gemstar's electronic programming guide (EPG) technology could find a home on TiVo digital video recorders (DVR) as a result.

In addition to dropping standing litigation, the two companies forged a new business relationship under which Gemstar will provide its TV Guide-branded content to TiVo under a new license agreement. In turn, Gemstar-TV Guide will provide TiVo with "branded entertainment content" that will show up on the front page of TiVo's "Showcase" area.

The deal, they said, will allow TiVo and Gemstar to collaborate with current and future Gemstar-TV Guide licensees in the tech and consumer electronics industries. Gemstar noted that the patent license provided to TiVo does not require the electronic guide giant to alter its current EPG data provided to TiVo's DVR subscribers.

"As a loyal subscriber to the TiVo service, I am pleased that we have resolved our issues with them and we look forward to working closely with a brand that is quickly emerging as a powerful resource for television viewers," said Gemstar-TV Guide CEO Jeff Shell, in a statement.
