Strategy & Technology Ltd. and UniSoft Corp. have inked a non-exclusive deal with CableLabs to create a test environment for OCAP (Open Cable Application Platform), a middleware for set-top boxes and other "host" devices based on the OpenCable specification.
The arrangement calls for S&T to adapt its SoftOC object carousel and multiplexing technology for OCAP testing. The software/hardware combo, the company added, can be used in conjunction with automated test equipment to perform the thousands of tests required to validate the conformance of OCAP and the Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) middleware specification, which shares the bulk of its technical makeup with the CableLabs OCAP spec.
UniSoft, as S&T's U.S. representative, will distribute the OCAP-compatible technology and tools for middleware testing.
"We are also talking through OCAP authoring issues with the cable networks, planning content creation trials in order to prepare for OCAP test deployment anticipated to be a reality late 2003 or early 2004," said Guy Hadland, UniSoft's director of iTV products.
