Matthew Wharton, 17, has won the 2003 Milton Jerrold Shapp Memorial Scholarship, the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers announced Thursday.

Matthew, valedictorian at Apache Junction High School in Apache Junction, Ariz., is the son of Mark Wharton of Cox Communications and Judi Wharton.

Matthew, a varsity football player and member of his schools' track team, math club and Spanish club, has maintained a grade-point average of 4.122. Following participation in a summer engineering program at the University of Notre Dame, he has since decided to pursue a degree in computer engineering.

Established in 1996 and sponsored by Motorola Broadband, the $20,000 scholarship honors the late Milton Jerrold Shapp, founder of Jerrold Electronics and former governor of Pennsylvania.
