EarthLink Inc. said it will offer its dial-up Internet subs Web surfing speeds up to five-times faster than standard rates — as long as they don't mind paying a bit extra each month.
That service, called EarthLink Plus, uses a proprietary, Web acceleration tool that reduces the size of Web pages and "page elements" sent to customer browsers. That Web accelerator, provided by Propel Software Corp., supports browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later, Netscape 4.7 or later, and versions of Opera and Mozilla.
EarthLink Plus subs will also have access to "premium" technical support (calls will be answered in five minutes or less), receive eight e-mail boxes and 10 megabytes of Web server space, the company said.
The extra speed, e-mail boxes and server space will also cost EarthLink subs a bit more above the standard dial-up rate. EarthLink is offering the "Plus" tier for $28.95 per month. EarthLink's traditional unlimited dial-up plan goes for $21.95 per month.
