Cox Communications, in an effort to detect network anomalies and other potential security threats to its high-speed Internet backbone, has deployed a new system built by Arbor Networks.

The system, dubbed Peakflow SP, detects threats such as distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks and network worms. The system uses an architecture designed for network-wide data collection, analysis and detection.

"Effective DdoS protection ahs been a network security challenge for many years," said Jeff Hartley, Cox's manager of security and abuse at Cox Communications. "Many of the early solutions fell short because they were reactive."

Peakflow, he noted, enables Cox to locate and shutdown network attacks before they blossom.
