The market may be soft, but that didn't stop IP telephony startup Cedar Point Communications from scoring $25 million in a second round of funding.

Germany-based STAR Ventures led the round, with participation from Charles River Ventures, Battery Ventures, Comcast Interactive Capital and Ascent Ventures, which also participated in Cedar Point's first round, which netted the company about $19 million.

Cedar Point's claim to fame is the SAFARI C3, a PacketCable-based product that combines several components — including the call management server, record keeping server, media gateway controller and signaling gateway — into one device. The call management server component of the SAFARI C3 is presently undergoing testing for PacketCable 1.0 certification at CableLabs.

"Our research indicates that the SAFARI C3 is uniquely positioned to accelerate 'greenfield' deployments of VoIP, and to provide elegant migration paths for legacy circuit switched voice systems," said Star Ventures Managing Partner Jeanne Bayless, in a press release.

Derry, N.H.-based CedarPoint presently has trial relationships with Comcast Corp. and MetroCast Cablevision.
