Irdeto patent 'traces' digital piracy
Aiming to thwart digital Internet theft, Irdeto Access has patented a new technology designed to allow content owners to trace the source of pirated material.
In addition to content owners, the technology, which is a component of Irdeto's overall security management platform, also targets network operators. The core of Irdeto's new system enables operators to insert unique "fingerprints" on encrypted content and trace the initial smart card or the device that a pirate might use to decrypt the content.
Irdeto said the technology also is designed for future upgrades without impacting the set-top box.
The technology will be particularly effective in protecting video-on-demand content as well as media stored in devices such as digital video recorders, the company said.
"The possibility to trace the source of pirated content is an effectively complementary tool in our fight against piracy," said Irdeto CEO Graham Kill.
