Utah-based wireless Internet service provider BroadBand Solutions Company said it has expanded its high-speed data coverage to about 80 percent of the population between Payson and Layton — an area that covers an 80- by 20-mile region in the state.

BroadBand Solutions uses wireless point-to-point technology that operates in the unlicensed Industrial-Scientific-Medical band of radio frequencies. The company targets residences and businesses not yet reached by land-based broadband services such as DSL and cable.

Customers of the WISP service must mount a small transceiver, which, in turn, links up to a BroadBand Solutions access point as far as 10 miles away, the company said. BroadBand Solutions has installed 40 such access points along Utah's Wasatch Front.

The company's "premium" business service offers dedicated data rates of between 256 kbps and 100 Mbps, while its residential service offers data rates ranging from 256 kbps and 1.1 Mbps, but limits those customers to 10 gigabytes per month of transferred data.

To date, BroadBand Solutions has signed up about 5,500 residential subscribers, more than 300 business customers, and offers services in seven hotels.
