Verizon has filed a motion in federal court that aims to stay a recent ruling that ordered the company to reveal the identity of one of its Internet subs to the Recording Industry Association of America.
In that case, the RIAA, which represents labels such as Warner Music, Sony Music, Universal Music Group and EMI Group, wants Verizon to hand over information on customer who allegedly downloaded more than 600 copyrighted songs daily via the Internet.
Verizon said it is seeking the stay in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to preserve the privacy of its subscribers and the allow the appeals court "to review the important statutory and constitutional issues raised in this case."
"The recording industry brought this case as a 'test case' of its aggressive legal theories," argued Verizon Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel John Thorne.
