Luminous embarks on China expansion

After shipping metro optical access systems to a number of major China-based carriers, Luminous Networks will take the plunge and double its staff there over the next 90 days.

Tied to that, Luminous also plans to expand its current Shanghai facility by opening an office in Beijing in the first quarter of this year. The company's current China headquarters houses its staff and a customer demonstration lab. Over the next three months, Luminous will add staff for customer service, sales support, marketing, channel management and general management. Additionally, Luminous has already inked deals with seven reseller and system integration partners based in China. To date, deployments of Luminous' PacketWave metro optical access systems in China have reached 13 cities across seven provinces. Carrier customers include Shenzhen Keybridge Communications and Uninet Systems, among others.

"Luminous had the vision to recognize the opportunity in China early on and has capitalized on the market growth of the telecommunications infrastructure build-out in China," said Brian Noel, Luminous' vice president of marketing and business development.

Luminous' gear is based on pre-standard Residential Packet Ring (RPR) technology, creating a platform that combines Ethernet, TDM, video and wavelength services for telecommunications carriers and cable operators. A Layer 2 technology, RPR is designed to co-exist with legacy Sonet and Ethernet physical layers.

The 2.0 version of the RPR standard, the first to include a complete version of the draft, has been released for working group ballot. From there, the draft standard will weave its way through the consensus building process. An approval rate of 75 percent is required before it moves to the next stage, which is the sponsor group. A final draft can be published after achieving 75 percent approval at that stage.

A final, published IEEE RPR standard could be achieved by the late summer/early fall of 2003.
