Paul Bunyan gets its Gig on with Calix

Paul Bunyan Communications has teamed up with Calix to offer its customers in northern Minnesota a Gigabit service. Starting early next year, Paul Bunyan Communications will be offering its GigaZone Project service to its subscribers in northern Minnesota's Beltrami, Hubbard, Itasca, Koochiching, and St. Louis Counties.

Bright House Networks’ Babinski Cable-Tec champ

Propelled by victories in two events, Bright House Networks’ Greg Babinski took home the top honors at the SCTE International Cable-Tec Games in Denver earlier this week. Babinski, representing SCTE Region 9 and the SCTE Central Florida Chapter, beat out 29 other competitors in the 24th annual Cable-Tec Games.

Liberty Global’s Fries: ‘Thanks Netflix’

When Netflix dropped into Liberty Global’s European footprint, Liberty CEO and president Mike Fries said it prodded his company to innovate and grow. Fries, who spoke with Comcast executive vice president and CTO during a keynote Expo session Wednesday morning, said the cable industry across the globe needed to collaborate and continue to scale in order to compete with hyper-giants such as Google and Netflix.

Nair named program chair for Cable-Tec ’15 in New Orleans

Acheson wins SCTE Member of the Year

A stunned Bob Acheson of San Bruno Cable TV in Sunnyvale, Calif. humbly accepted SCTE’s prestigious Member of the Year Award during the organization’s annual awards luncheon Tuesday. The sales and marketing exec, who began his cable career more than 20 years ago, has volunteered his time to advance many causes, both in and out of the cable industry during his work with SCTE and San Bruno Cable.

When it comes to cloud environments, cable operators would do well to go with a hybrid model for a variety of reasons, according to a keynote panel Tuesday morning at Expo. Comcast executive vice president and chief technology officer Tony Werner moderated the panel “Cable’s cloud forecast: More apps and infrastructure,” which included a discussion on the role that dev ops and agile developments played in the cloud setting.

Full Channel’s Jamie Griffin emerged as the winner in the 2014 SCTE IP Challenge that concluded Monday night. Griffin took top honors over eight other contestants to become this year’s champion. Griffin, of Barrington, R.I., is director of technology with Full Channel.

Ericsson buys majority stake in Apcera

Ericsson said the acquistion of Apcera's PaaS will allow it to deliver complete cloud automation to run all workloads and use cases, while providing complete control for infrastructure. The company hopes to extend the same approach into operator and enterprise clouds.
