Sprint bows managed IP telephony

Sprint rolls out Sprint IP Telephony Services to manage and maintain its customers' networks.

The service, which is designed to take away the need for customers to manage their networks, offers a combination of Sprint's management, monitoring and maintenance services for IP-based voice services.

Sprint is using Cisco Systems ' Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data (AVVID) to help power the service. The standards-based network architecture is designed to provide a roadmap for combining business and technology strategies into one cohesive model, according to Sprint. Cisco is Sprint's preferred IP partner.

Earlier this month, Verizon Communications introduced a managed IP telephony service of its own, dubbed IPT Watch. The remote management service also uses Cisco's AVVID.

Like the Verizon service, Sprint's goal is to "free up the customer's IT staff to help them focus on their key business drivers to reduce the total cost of ownership," said Tim Donahue, Sprint's vice president of marketing.

Sprint has been beefing up its IP-based services as of late. Last week, the company introduced its IP Class of Service, which enables the convergence of voice, video and other IP traffic over a single connection. The service also enables customers to prioritize time-sensitive applications, such as video and voice, during congested periods on the network.
