AT&T files separate challenge to FCC’s net neutrality rules

AT&T’s suit is somewhat surprising as the carrier was expected to allow wireless industry organizations lead the legal battle. Yesterday, both the NCTA and ACA filed suits on behalf of the cable industry, as did the CTIA on behalf of its wireless constituency.

Nokia buys Alcatel-Lucent

Nokia will make an offer for all of the equity securities issued by Alcatel-Lucent, through a public exchange offer in France and in the United States, on the basis of 0.55 of a new Nokia share for every Alcatel-Lucent share. The deal values Alcatel-Lucent at $16.6 billion, and the deal is expected to close in early 2016.

Dish has made Netflix available for multiple room viewing for its customers with Joey receivers, and Vevo is now available to its customers with a Hopper DVR.

Dish adding voice input to its apps

Dish is building Rovi Conversation Services into its Explorer iPad app, Hopper Voice remote, and Dish Anywhere app for viewing from mobile devices. Dish customers will be able to use voice commands to search for live and on-demand content.

NCTA president Michael Powell said reclassification is unjustifiably going too far; that even a partial victory for any of the interests involved will be treated as a first step in completely undermining the FCC’s intent; and said that barring some other solution more litigation against the FCC is inevitable.

Confirmed: Nokia in talks to buy Alcatel Lucent

Nokia and ALU are "in advanced discussions with respect to a potential full combination, which would take the form of a public exchange offer by Nokia for Alcatel-Lucent." They cautioned there is "no certainty at this stage that these discussions will result in any agreement or transaction."

Arris and Charter formed a joint venture for the purpose of buying ActiveVideo. Arris will own 65 percent of the venture. Current ActiveVideo management, including CEO Jeff Miller, will continue to run the operation.

Mediacom doubles HD channels in Illinois systems

Over the next few months, Mediacom will be reclaiming all channels except for the basic tier in the Illinois counties of Morgan, Sangamon, and Menard. The company is looking to compete with demands for HD and faster internet speeds.

Ericsson offering cloud DVR

Ericsson already had live, linear and on-demand video capabilities, as well as traditional DVR capabilities with its Mediaroom TV Platform. But with the $95 million acquisition of cloud-based video specialist Fabrix Systems last fall, the company picked up the ability to help operators shift all DVR functions from the home to the cloud.

Disney/ABC is in the process of shifting its linear broadcast operations to an IP-based architecture, using technology from Imagine Communications. The company is ditching the classic broadcast center model in favor of running operations out of data centers.
