Nortel gets closer to the Edge
Nortel Networks has inked a $18.5 million deal to assist Edge Wireless LLC with its network upgrades in the western United States. The deal expands the companies' existing relationship.
Under the terms of the three-year deal, Nortel has been named Edge's provider of GSM/GPRS (global systems for mobile communications and general packet radio service) wireless infrastructure upgrades for its existing network, which is based on time division multiple access (TDMA) technology. Nortel also will supply its Shasta 5000 broadband services node and Passport Multiservice switches.
The upgrades, which will take place in Edge's operating area of California, Oregon, Idaho and Wyoming, will enable Edge to offer always on data applications, virtual private networks, personalized content for subscriber communities and personalized firewalls.
Edge Wireless is an AT&T Wireless affiliate.
