Worldwide sales of semiconductors, after their worst-ever slump in 2001, are on the rebound this year and will rise a modest 3.1 percent to $143 billion (U.S.), a trade group said yesterday.

After rising modestly this year, global sales of semiconductors will rise 23.2 percent to $177 billion in 2003 and 20.9 percent to $213 billion in 2004, the Semiconductor Industry Association predicts in its mid-year forecast for the industry. Muted growth of 0.9 per cent, to $215 billion, is expected to follow in 2005, it added.

In 2001, global chip sales plunged 34 per cent, twice the second-worst percentage decline in 1985.
