Scientific-Atlanta will explore telephony options with Integra5 Communications. Up first: the addition of a caller ID function to its Explorer set-top box.

The application will enable cable subscribers to view caller ID information on their television screen. S-A contends that cable operators must offer the triple play — voice, video and data — to effectively compete with satellite providers. Last week, satellite provider EchoStar Communications Corp. announced plans to add caller ID and a search function to its DishPVR 501 satellite TV receiver.

This year Allied Business Intelligence estimates that there will be 5.2 million cable telephony subscribers, up from nearly three million last year.

The companies will demonstrate the feature next month at the SCTE Show in San Antonio, and plan to unveil other telephony features in the future. Integra5 has joined S-A's CreativEdge Developer Program.

Separately, S-A announced the Lifetime Movie Network is using its PowerVu encoding equipment to enable cable operators to digitally insert local advertising. The D9120 advanced encoder will perform the Digital Program Insertion by compressing the signal and inject the signal based on trigger inputs.
