OpenTV passes 25-million mark
In the interactive television race, you have to be in it to win it. A philosophy apparently followed by OpenTV - the iTV company announced today it surpassed 25 million set-top box deployments at the end of March.
For the quarter ended March 31, OpenTV reported middleware deployments in excess of 2 million, which marks the sixth consecutive quarter the company has posted gains of more than 2 million.
Major network operator contributors include EchoStar Communications, BSkyB, Bell ExpressVu and DirecTV Latin America.
In the comparable 2001 quarter, OpenTV was reporting its software had been deployed in 16 million set-tops.
Since the beginning of the year, OpenTV has been awarded four new technology patents, bringing its total to 92 patents worldwide.
Earlier this month, Liberty Media announced a deal —$185 million in cash and shares — to snatch up a controlling interest in the iTV technology provider. Liberty's total economic interest in OpenTV is roughly 46 percent, and its voting interest is roughly 89 percent.
