Microtune Inc. has introduced the MicroTuner MT2050, a single-chip tuner that claims to cut radio frequency (RF) costs by almost 25 percent, board space by 20 percent and power by 11 percent.

Targeting advanced DOCSIS 2.0 cable modems, new computer-controlled cable modems (CCCMs) and digital interactive set-tops, the MT2050 is priced at $5 per unit in quantities of 10,000 or more.

Microtune said Hitron and Advanced Digital Broadcast are among the first companies that plan to integrate the new tuners. Additionally, Microtune and Texas Instruments aim to integrate the MT2050 in a new cable modem reference design.
