As cable operators continue to wrestle with advanced services rollouts, chipmakers are busy back at the lab trying to push the technology envelope. The latest offering from Broadcom Corp. enables iTV functionality and broadband Internet access through a single set-top.

The BCM7110 system-on-a-chip system provides a dedicated digital cable TV channel and a DOCSIS 1.1 cable modem to enable iTV functionality and high-speed Internet access through the same device, Broadcom said in a statement.

The BCM7110 incorporates PVR functionality, a high-performance MIPS processor, an advanced 2D graphics system and mixed signal integration. The technology supports home networking through Ethernet, 802.11b Wi-Fi wireless and other various options.

To deliver a second voice over IP voice line service, the BCM7110 gateway box can be combined with the BCM1101.

Broadcom also introduced a single chip decoder to enhance the functionality of DBS set-tops. Like the BCM7110, the BCM7315 includes PVR functionality, a high-performance MIPS processor, an advanced 2D graphics system and mixed signal integration.
