RCN customers to get faster dial-up

While not every Internet customer is interested in broadband service, most would likely be interested in faster dial-up service. For many customers of competitive provider RCN Corp., they now have the option of using newer, faster V.92 modem technology.

The new standards-based service takes dial-up to a whole new level — enabling faster connections, quicker downloads and the ability to receive additional calls or faxes with uninterrupted dial-up service. More than two-thirds of RCN's customer base is eligible for the new service, but they'll need to have a V.92 compatible modem to get the service up and running.

Specifically, V.92 technology enables faster speeds through new compression technology that packs data more tightly together, increasing data throughput rates in a range of 20 percent to 60 percent. The new Modem-On-Hold feature allows a dial-up customer to receive incoming phone calls or faxes while still maintaining their Internet connection. A customer needs only to have call waiting service from the local phone company to enable the switching capability. Another advantage to V.92: the time it takes to establish the dial-up connection is half of the almost 30 seconds regular dial-up connections usually take to connect.
