L.A. Overbuilder launches in Pasadena
Cable television customers in Pasadena, Calif. will now have a choice in service providers, with the launch last week of voice/video/data services from overbuilder Altrio Communications into that market.
Altrio offers traditional television, video-on-demand, high speed Internet via cable modem, along with local and long distance telephone in its service bundle, now available in the Pasadena and Arcadia, Calif. markets.
Altrio has built a headend in the Los Angeles area to serve more than 2 million potential homes across the market. The L.A. area is one of the few major metropolitan markets where an overbuild model like Altrio's may be able to compete effectively head-to-head with MSO competition, as Los Angeles is a hodge-podge of MSO players, with more than eight MSO companies splitting the L.A. pie. Altrio's incumbent competition in Arcadia and the soon-to-be-launched Monrovia market is Adelphia; in Pasadena it's Charter. The "boulderized" nature of the L.A. market should mean easier entry by Altrio into the market because of a lack of unified incumbent competition.
"It's one of things about Los Angeles that makes it more attractive to us," said Dave Large, Altrio CTO.
