S-A to launch cable modem; Bell Labs breaks record

Scientific-Atlanta released its WebSTAR DPX120 Euro-DOCSIS 1.0-certified cable modem. The product also operates as DOCSIS modem, and uses a faster microprocessor than previous models. The cable modem is designed for Ethernet and USB conection, has a small footprint, uses WebWizard, and has enhanced bi-directional performance for data throughput. S-A plans to have it available in the second quarter. …

3Com Corp.'s losses narrowed in its third quarter to $236.1 million, or 67 cents a share, from $246 million, or 72 cents a share a year ago. Sales fell to $356 million, however, compared with $629.6 million a year ago. The company included a $64 million restructuring charge. …

Bell Labs scientists say they've set a new fiber optic transmission record by sending 2.56 terabits per second over 2,500 miles, or roughly the distance between Orlando and San Diego, says parent company Lucent Technologies. The previous record was 1.60 Tbps over 1,250 miles. Scientists used a 64 channel DWDM system, with each channel carrying information at 40 Gbps. The technique sends multiple streams of information down the same optical fiber, which were 62.5 miles long. …

AT&T launched a joint venture in China with Shanghai Telecom and Shanghai Information Investment to provide IP-based data services to businesses in the Pudong business district of Shanghai. Shanghai Symphony Telecom, which will market its services under the brand name Unisiti, will carry its own products and services, plus some from AT&T and China Telecom. Unisiti will start in Pudong, and expects to expand through Shanghai and then into other major Chinese cities. …

Canada's Group Telecom set up a special committee of independent directors and it retained Morgan Stanley & Co. Inc. to help find "capital structure enhancements." The committee will oversee Morgan Stanley. The move is the latest in GT's effort to reorganize, although the company says it's in compliance with all terms of its debt facilities and instruments. …
