TV Guide Interactive Inc., WorldGate and Concurrent Computer Corp. pooled their respective products and services to construct a combined iTV/VOD package the trio expects to release to cable operators this summer.
The services are designed to work on Motorola Inc.'s DCT-2000 set-top box and not use a middleware platform, the trio says.
Under the arrangement, subscribers can get access to WorldGate's service to send and receive e-mail, chat online, shop, play games and surf the Web and see digital pictures.
They also can get access to TVGI2001, TV Guide Interactive's IPG product that gives interactive program guide functionality, including pay-per-view and support for third-party applications access via an integrated enhanced VOD interface.
Concurrent will contribute the MediaHawk Broadband VOD system, allowing subscribers to use their digital set-top boxes to call up movies with VCR functionality.
The package is going into lab tests and is expected to be available to North American cable operators starting this summer, the trio say in a statement.
