Digital consumers on the rise

Last fall's launch of 50 new digital TV channels pushed the number of digital consumers up by 13 percent by the end of 2001, says a report released yesterday by Decima Publishing.

"The percentage increase in subscribers between August/September and November/December 2001 was slightly higher than the previous few months," says the report, entitled Digital Domain: Tracking the Growth and Development of the Canadian Digital TV Market.

The report is the third in a quarterly series.

It reveals, too, that the two satellite providers — Bell ExpressVu and Star Choice — continue to dominate the digital environment, with 62 percent of the market share in November/December versus cable's 35 percent. Decima says those percentages are expected to change only marginally by the end of this year.

The overall number of digital TV subscribers stood at 2.8 million by the end of 2001 and now stands at 2.9 million.

But the report does note that cable is adding subscribers at a faster rate than in the U.S., with the domestic subscriber base increasing by 16 percent in the fourth quarter, compared with 11 percent growth south of the border.
