CableLabs completed a busy week with the announcement it certified a record 12 DOCSIS 1.1 cable modems and qualified two cable modem termination systems in its third 1.1 wave. It also certified or re-certified seven cable modems for DOCSIS 1.0.
CableLabs says Accton, Arris, Askey, Conexant, Quanta, Samsung, Scientific-Atlanta, Tellabs, Terayon, Thomson and Xrosstech had their cable modems certified under DOCSIS 1.1. The organization also awarded DOCSIS 1.1 qualification to CMTSs from Arris and Riverstone.
A total of 21 DOCSIS 1.1 cable modems have been certified and four CMTSs have been qualified, CableLabs says.
The 1.1 cable modems are compatible with existing DOCSIS 1.0 equipment and work on systems alongside modems slated for future versions of DOCSIS. The 1.1 version also allows high-speed Internet service tiers via "techniques known as data fragmentation and quality of service," it says. The two techniques in turn allow delivery of high-speed Internet services simultaneously over the same plant and in a path parallel to core video services.
CableLabs also certified or re-certified DOCSIS 1.0 cable modems from Aastra, Asustek, Linksys, Motorola and Thomson, it says. Thus far, 203 DOCSIS 1.0 cable modems have been certified and 26 1.0 CMTSs have been qualified.
