Royal Philips Electronics gave silicon manufacturer Ishoni Networks a $25 million shot in the arm in exchange for 51 percent majority interest in Santa Clara, Calif.-based Ishoni.

The Philips investment includes agreements for joint product development, joint sales and marketing activities, and manufacturing. It is expected to result in an accelerated effort to expand a portfolio of silicon system solutions for broadband CPE with advanced networking, voice and security functionality for last-mile access and in-home networking. Ishoni has developed a voice-over-broadband gateway for home or office use.

Philips Semiconductors and Ishoni will work to create complete silicon platforms for CPE devices that provide voice, data and security services over cable or DSL.

Ishoni's Gateway-on-a-Chip allows manufacturers of home gateways and customer premise equipment to create advanced networking, management and security applications.

Joint development work will begin immediately. The two organizations will share intellectual property, and will jointly own rights to resulting products. Development is expected to be expanded to include fiber, fixed wireless and satellite applications in the future. Philips will have rights to sell, distribute and market the Ishoni products under the Philips brand.
