S-A/Cox converge in La.; Investcorp buys Teligent unit for $60M

Scientific-Atlanta installed its Prisma IP optical transport network into Cox Communications ' Lafayette, La., system, creating a converged network on one platform, regardless of traffic, S-A says. The company's SciCare Broadband Services installed and integrated the system into the network, and is supplying support for the six-node system, 24-7. …

Investcorp picked up the assets of Executive Conference Inc., an audio and Internet-based conferencing service, for $60 million in cash from Teligent Inc. Teligent filed for bankruptcy in May and was seeking a buyer. Investcorp. says the unit will be headed by ECI Conference Call Services co-founder Graham Sampson, also its former Chair and CEO. …

SCTE VP of Standards Stephen P. Oksala was elected vice chair at the American National Standards Institute's board. Oksala's spot at ANSI entails working with governance and development of policies for the standards entity. Oksala has served on ANSI's board for a dozen years and chairs its National Issues Committee. …

Choice One Communications activated the Buffalo, N.Y., intra-city fiber ring it recently bought from Fibertech Networks. The fiber ring reduces Choice One's dependence on incumbent carriers, and is its third activated with Fibertech, it says. …

Three set-top makers have signed CableLabs' POD-Host Interface License Agreement, a.k.a. PHILA. Pace Micro Technology signed last month, and Motorola Broadband Communications Sector and Scientific-Atlanta Inc. signed earlier. PHILA is part of CableLabs' OpenCable project and signers get a license to deploy proprietary technology needed to make OpenCable set-tops. …

Metromedia Fiber Network Inc. affirmed its Q4 guidance of $100 million to $103 million in revenue, for a total of $360 million to $363 million for the year. It also says it expects $510 million to $535 million in 2002 revenue. …

Mediacom Communications Corp. will replace its third-party provider, ExciteAtHome, with its own high-speed Internet service, dubbed Mediacom Online. AT&T will supply the IP network backbone and certain core Internet support functions as part of the deal, Mediacom says. The company plans to complete its migration by the previously announced Feb. 28 deadline. …

Hughes Electronics Corp.'s DirecTV Inc. says it added 405,000 net new customers in Q4, or 910,000 gross, it says. For the year, DirecTV had 1.4 million net new subscribers, for a total of 10.7 million customers in 2001, compared with 9.5 million in 2000. …

No real news from the SCTE Conference on Emerging Tech in San Jose. The show starts to kick in this afternoon with a couple of seminars and a welcome reception tonight, but thus far hasn't shown any of the relentless hype and cable glitterati surrounding the International CES show in Las Vegas. An SCTE spokeswoman could not be reached by CEDaily's deadline, nor could reps for Scientific- Atlanta, one of three welcome reception sponsors. Stay tuned. …
