Cox Communications said it has selected Openwave Systems Inc.'s messaging platform for a growing cable modem service that stands at more than 779,000 residential customers.

The IP-based Openwave Email Mx platform is configured for a variety of messaging applications, including unified messaging, instant messaging and multimedia messaging.

Openwave said its platform is based on open architecture and Internet standards, allowing operators to extend and adapt their messaging services.

Openwave's "carrier-scale messaging platform allows us to provide a high level of performance and reliability to our customers today, with the capability to expand to new and innovative services as time goes on," said Cox Chief Information Officer Scott Hatfield, in a statement.
