IEEE Standard 802.16 — Air Interface for Fixed Broadband Wireless Access Systems — was approved today by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Standards Association's standard board.

The approval will "set the stage" for more widespread deployment of 10 GHz to 66 GHz wireless metropolitan area networks, the group says.

The interface standard is the first broadband wireless access standard from an accredited standards organization, it says. The standard will be published by January.

The 802.16 standard was created in a two-year, open consensus process involving "hundreds of engineers." The standard allows interoperability among products from multiple manufacturers and includes a medium access control layer supporting multiple physical layer specifications, the board says. Extensions to the 2 GHz to 11 GHz bands should be done next summer.
