ExciteAtHome will creep closer to its Feb. 28 demise when it shuts down its Excite U.K. portal Friday. The portal site recommends moving to, "who provide very similar services," the company says in a message to users.

"This means that all Excite UK services will no longer be available," it reads. Users can get access to e-mail, however, until Dec. 31.

Users registered for the Udate personals service can go to Udate's U.K. site to continue. Messaging service customers are being referred to Messagepoint.

The portal employs 48 people, who will be laid off Friday, according to news reports. A core group will of workers will stay on until Spring to help with the closure.

Excite U.K. was launched in 1997 as a joint venture with British Telecom. It was put up for sale a month ago, but found no buyers.

ExciteAtHome announced earlier this month is would switch the Chapter 11 bankruptcy it filed in September to a liquidation. The company will close after Feb. 28.
