CableLabs certified seven more DOCSIS 1.1 cable modems, it says today, for a total of nine 1.1-certified cable modems and two qualified CMTSs.

The latest wave ended with cable modems from Ambit, Arris, Ericsson, Scientific-Atlanta and Tellabs landing DOCSIS 1.1 certification. Likewise, Toshiba secured certification for one new cable modem and re-certification for another. Texas Instruments also had its new cable modem certified.

CableLabs says 1.1 cable modems are compatible with existing DOCSIS 1.0 equipment and work with systems and modems that will be certified under future DOCSIS versions.

1.1 allows tiering of high-speed Internet service through techniques called data fragmentation and QoS, the organization says. The techniques allow the high-speed services simultaneously over the same plant, and in a path parallel to core video services.

DOCSIS 1.1-compliant equipment will become the foundation for expanded advanced cable services, allowing operators to deliver twice the level of functionality and to cut costs in half, CableLabs says.
