NCTA study: cable industry sees healthy signups

The cable industry signed up 2.4 million new digital broadband customers in the third quarter — about even with the rate in the second quarter, a survey says.

According to a member survey conducted by National Cable & Telecommunications Association, digital video signed on 1.5 million new customers and high-speed cable Internet landed 825,000 new customers during the time between July 1 and Sept. 30.

The organization says the the industry now has a total 13.7 million digital video customers, or about 20 percent of American cable customers.

Likewise, the new cable Internet signups bring the number of cable modem customers nationwide to 6.4 million, and high-speed Internet service over cable modem is available to more than 70 million homes nationally, NCTA says.

Finally, NCTA says 130,000 residential cable phone customers signed up during the quarter, for a total of 1.45 million nationally. The survey says the number of cable phone customers grew by 50 percent during the first three quarters.

NCTA President and CEO Robert Sachs called the news very encouraging in light of the economic downturn.
