HighSpeed Surfing waxes modularity

HighSpeed Surfing Inc. has launched the SM 200, a modular cable modem with wireless and wired home networking components.

The model, which is DOCSIS 1.0-based and upgradable to 1.1, employs "snap-on" home networking modules. The first module, the SM 200 AP, offers an 802.11b-based wireless access point to the modem's base unit. HighSpeed Surfing's AP module also houses a two-port 10/100Base-T Ethernet switch.

That modular approach for residential and home-business customers "allows MSOs to offer popular new capabilities and additional IP services without expensive truck rolls and customer services calls," said company Vice President of Marketing and Sales Douglas Schwartz.

HighSpeed Surfing noted that the SM 200 marks the first in a line of other modular home networking products that serve as the foundation of the company's line of CableHome-based gateway products.

Schwartz said Time Warner Cable is currently lab testing the product, which is scheduled to begin shipping sometime in December.
