AT&T selling bonds to finance DirecTV purchase

AT&T has sold $17.5 billion in bonds in anticipation of its merger with DirecTV. To help secure Federal approval for the deal, the company is promising to expand GigaPower to two million additional customers.  


Cablevision debuts packages for cord cutters

The packages start with broadband, and also make use of the situation that Aereo tried (but failed) to exploit – that local TV channels are free over the air. Cablevision’s new packages come with a free HDTV antenna that subscribers can install in their homes.


Comcast walking away from TWC deal

From the beginning, the company vigorously defended the merger as a great deal for everyone involved, but all of the proposed benefits were nice-to-haves -- nothing associated with the deal was imperative or solved any particular problem for anybody.


Modest U-verse growth in AT&T's Q1

AT&T’s broadband subscriber base grew by 440,000 to 12.6 million. The company’s pay TV subscriptions increased by 50,000 in the quarter. The company’s U-verse service makes up 69 percent of wireline consumer revenues, which is a 10 percent increase year over year.


Comcast activates Gigabit Pro in Florida markets

Comcast will bring Gigabit Pro to its customers in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm, and Jacksonville early next month. In total, 1.3 million Florida customers will have access to the fiber to the home (FTTH) symmetrical 2Gbps service, if they want it.


CenturyLink dinged $16M for 911 outage

CenturyLink has agreed to pay a settlement fee of $16 million to the federal government for a 911 outage that affected seven states. most were in Washington. According to local reports, the outages were due to a software coding error by Intrado Communications.


Arris to buy Pace for $2.1B

Arris bought Motorola Home for $2.35 billion at the end of 2012. Only last week, the company teamed with Charter Communications to buy ActiveVideo, for a total of $135 million. Pace, meanwhile, recently purchased Aurora Networks for $310 million.

Bright House adds DDoS mitigation to business services

Bright House developed the service to help users address the yearly increase in DDoS attacks, which occur when systems traffic floods the bandwidth or resources of a specific system on one or more web servers and result in site crashes.


Bright House adds security to hotspot network

Bright House now offers an authenticated Wi-Fi network, BHN Secure, to its customers in hotspots within all of its service areas. Wi-Fi users are authenticated and connected to an encrypted network.


Senate heavyweights urge rejection of Comcast-TWC merger

Six U.S. Senators have asked the Justice Department and the FCC to block Comcast’s takeover of Time Warner Cable. Sens. Franken, Sanders, Markey, Wyden, Warren, and Blumenthal did not even address the possibility of approving the merger with conditions, asking instead that the deal be rejected outright.


CenturyLink buys cloud database specialist Orchestrate

CenturyLink has acquired Orchestrate, a Portland-based startup with a fully managed cloud-service for managing multiple databases. According to media reports, CenturyLink spent between $10 and $12 million for the company.
