OpenTV and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. completed a jointly developed Multimedia Home Platform extension. The MHP 1.0.1 standard will affect OpenTV's advanced digital ITV platform, it says.

The product is slated to be available as soon as the Digital Video Broadcasting project group releases its MHP Test Suite later this year, OpenTV says. DVB developed the MHP standard as a common application programming interface for delivering multimedia services. Prior to the standard, adaptors were needed to operate technology selected by different broadcast networks or set-top box manufacturers.

The MHP standard allows digital interactive content and services to be developed for all MHP-compliant TV set-top boxes, integrated TVs and multimedia PCs, the company says.

It adds that network operators who already deployed ITV services with OpenTV can continue using existing set-top boxes, and/or deploy set-tops running OpenTV and the MHP extension.
