Pioneer task force to tackle home networks

Pioneer is gambling that TV and digital set-top boxes will act as the hub of home networks. The set-top and software maker formed a home-networking task force to develop systems combining its home entertainment, and cable and communications products.

The team, drawn from the company's business solutions and home entertainment divisions, will be headed by VP of Product Development Ray Tozaki and is intended to let Pioneer craft set-tops that also act as digital gateways for the home.

It's "the most obvious choice for a home network control device for consumer electronics products," says spokesman Mark Gurvey in a statement.

The company will model the project after its Voyager 3000 set-top, because of its "potential of enabled defacto standards and (its ability to) support infrared, USB, serial port and IEEE 1394 communications," the company says.

The task force's first product will be an advanced digital set-top with PVR functions, it says.
