Jupiter posts subscriber gains in Japan

Jupiter Telecommunications Co. Ltd., the largest broadband and cable service provider in Japan, reported an impressive one-year gain in total subscriber households, as well as in cable TV, telephony and high-speed access subscriber categories.

Since the end of June 2000, the number of households subscribing to at least one Jupiter service increased 84 percent (485,000 subs), from 591,400 to 1,076,400; cable TV service subscribers jumped 74 percent (425,800 subs) to 1,001,300 subs; telephony customers increased a whopping 315 percent (83,800 customers) from 26,600 to 110,400 customers; and high-speed access subscribers leaped 537 percent (194,000 subs) from 36,100 to 230,100 subscribers.

The company's principal shareholders include Sumitomo Corp., Liberty Media Group, Microsoft Corp., Toshiba Corp., and Itochu Corp.
