Cox cops an attitude in touting DSL package

Cox Business Services is taking on an edgy sector of dumped DSL customers by launching Cox Business Internet, a three-tiered DSL package.

The promo pulls no punches: "Nothing ruins a perfectly good Internet connection like a provider that goes belly up," it says in its materials, which also promise "Faster Internet access. Without those pesky bankruptcies." Or the more nostalgic, "Remember the DSL providers who said they were always on? Boy, were they wrong."

The slogans have been around awhile as Cox moved into the business market over the last year, spokesman Bobby Amirshahi says. Cox intends to continue them in promoting CBI.

The company set up the graduated service levels to let customers start with moderate bandwidth and work their way up, as needed. Tier one has speeds up to 128 Kbps upstream and downstream, while tier two goes up to 256 Kbps up- and downstream. Tier three reaches speeds up to 1.5 Mbps downstream and 256 Kbps upstream. A separate ad promises download speeds up to 3.2 Mbps, but that was specific to San Diego capabilities, Amirshahi says. While some areas allow Cox to supply faster speeds, the three tiers are consistent across all of its markets.

The services include five e-mail addresses and an IP address, Cox says.
