STMicroelectronics has introduced an advanced HDTV encoder IC called the STi7020, and the STV0397, a multi-channel VoIP processor for cable network-based telephony products.

The STi7020 contains multiple stream MPEG high definition (HD)/standard definition (SD) video decoding, audio decoding, a 2-D/3-D graphics subsystem and functions such as NTSC/PAL video encoder and high definition and standard definition video DACS.

The STi7020 supports multiple HDTV video and audio standards, including the US ATSC and Japanese ARIB/BS4, and its multi-stream decoding MPEG video core supports two HD video streams or up to five SD video streams.

The STi7020 can be used in both stand-alone HDTV sets and in set-top boxes or residential gateways supporting HDTV.

The STV0397 functions as an audio compression co-processor. Coupled with the STV0396 and Veracity software, the STV0397 enables OEM cable modem manufacturers to offer a complete PacketCable compliant voice/data solution.
