Qmedia will use optical switches from Stockholm-based Net Insight in the 10,000-mile fiber optic network Qmedia is building across North America. The network initially will connect broadcast stations, production studios and others in the professional media industry, Qmedia reports.

Under the deal, worth a potential $20 million during the next two years, Net Insight will provide its Nimbra Series switches, with DTM protocol and ASIC technlogy, allowing the optical switches to "be muxing and carrying uncompressed serial digital video streams at 270 Mbps and IP streams simultaneously over fiber," Qmedia says.

The network will connect media centers in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Toronto and Vancouver, and will reach more than 50 cities, covering 65 percent of American TV-watchers, the company says. Services include program distribution, point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, national and regional multipoint, and digital video production. Qmedia says it also signed agreements with Fujitsu, Level 3 and ADC for optoelectronic equipment, fiber and network interfaces.
